Three Categories of Water Damage

When sewage backup happens, you will find yourself with one of three types of water damages to deal with. These are:

Category 1: Clean Water – Because it contains no contaminants, this is the least dangerous type of sewage water. Usually caused by a leaking faucet, broken washer line or burst pipe. The standing water it creates can escalate into Category 2 or Category 3 damages if not addressed immediately.

Category 2: Gray Water – Gray water usually contains some contaminants and microbes. It typically is created by toilet overflow that includes only urine or a dishwasher overflow. Clean water that has been left to stand for more than 24 hours becomes gray water.

Category 3: Black Water – The most dangerous type of sewage water, black water contains feces from a toilet overflow or similar contaminants that have entered your home from an outdoor flood.

Having a regular schedule for sewage removal and septic tank desludging will minimize your possibility of experiencing toilet overflow, clogged drains, clogged toilets or sewage-related flooding.

When to Have Your Septic Tank Cleaned & Desludged

For homeowners with septic tanks, it is recommended that you clean and desludge your septic tank every 3-5 years to prevent short-circuiting of the treatment process. On average, a septic tank with a 1,500-gallon capacity that is being used by a family of four should be cleaned at least once every three years. The more people in the home, the more frequent the desludging should occur.

Your septic tank is in need of sewage removal if you spot any of these signs:

  • Difficulty in flushing your toilet
  • Water in drains takes extra time to subside
  • Strong foul odors from your septic tank area
  • A pool of water around your septic tank
